Syrian army claims Israeli jets fired missiles at military post

An Israeli army spokesperson earlier declined to discuss reports of the air strike, saying the army did not comment on operational matters.

It made no mention of the research center, describing the strikes instead as an attempt to hamper Syria's fight against the Islamic State and warning of "serious repercussions of such acts of aggression on the security and stability of the region".

Israeli fighter jets have struck a military facility in western Syria, killing two people, according to a Syrian commander. -Gen (ret.) Yaakov Amidror, the strike on the military facility near Masyafthe followed a visit by Hezbollah's leader, Hassan Nasrallah to Damascus last week.

Israeli officials have not immediately commented on the reports. He gave no details but warned "this is something Israel can not accept".

Citing pro-government activists, Al-Masdar News, a pan-Arab news and commentary website, said Thursday that Israeli warplanes targeted the Scientific Studies and Research Center (SSRC) in Masyaf in the west-central Syrian province of Hama at 3:30 a.m. Damascus time.

"And we will not allow them to build the capabilities of Hizbollah under the chaotic umbrella of Syria".

"We are not looking for any military adventure in Syria but we are determined to prevent our enemies from harming, or even creating the opportunity to harm the security of Israeli citizens", the defense minister said in an interview with Radio FM 100.

Israel has conducted almost 100 airstrikes since the beginning of the Syrian civil war, with this one marking an escalation in tensions between the two governments. The government has blasted accusations of chemical weapons use in Khan Sheikhun as "fabrications".

However, according to a United Nations report published yesterday, at least 20 suspected chemical attacks have been carried out by his forces since then.

But in 2016, a UN-led investigative body said the Syrian government was behind at leat three chemical attacks in northern Syria in the previous two years.

The SSRC oversees advanced missile production and remaining stockpiles of chemical weapons, including sarin gas.

The Observatory reported that seven people were killed or wounded in the strike.
