India offers development assistance to Myanmar's Rakhine

LIVE | PM Modi on maiden visit to Myanmar to address Indian diaspora in Yangoon

In a joint statement issued after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's talks with State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, the two sides called on the global community to end selective and partial approaches to combating terrorism. It is his first bilateral visit to the country; it is a very important neighboring country.

Naming Mahatma Gandhi, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Rabindranath Tagore and Bahadur Shah Zafar, he said Myanmar had become the "second home" for those who had to leave their own homes during the freedom struggle.

Prime Minister Modi also presented the country's President, U. Htin Kyaw, a reproduction of a 1841-map of a stretch of the River Salween (that flows from the Tibetan Plateau into the Andaman Sea) and a sculpture of the Bodhi tree.

India and Myanmar on Wednesday exchanged agreements between Election Commission of India and Union Election Commission of Myanmar.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi received a ceremonial reception at the Presidential Palace in Nay Pyi Taw, as he arrived on a two-day visit to Myanmar.

In a Facebook statement, Aung San Suu Kyi said the government had "already started defending all the people in Rakhine in the best way possible".

"We share your concerns about extremist violence in Rakhine state and violence against security forces and how innocent lives have been affected", PM Modi said in a joint statement with Suu Kyi at Myanmar's capital Nay Pyi Taw.

More than 123,000 Rohingyas have fled Myanmar for Bangladesh in two weeks.

Listof MoUs/Agreements signed during State visit of Prime Minister to Myanmar. The Myanmar leader thanked Modi for his support against the "terror threat" her country faces.

■ We want all stake holders to work towards preserving Myanmar's unity and territorial integrity: PM after talks with Aung San Suu Kyi.

The Prime Minister announced gratis visas for all Myanmar nationals keen to visit India.

For several years now, India has steered clear of supporting the West's vocal criticism of human rights abuses in Myanmar - both under Modi and earlier, when the Congress was in power, and equally when the military junta ruled in the neighbouring nation and under Suu Kyi.
