Relatives mourn the death of journalist Gauri Lankesh who shot dead by miscreant at her residence in Bengaluru. Pic PTI

About Lankesh's murder, Chaturvedi now says, "It has sent shock waves through the fabric of my being".

However, Gauri Lankesh herself didn't tell her family she was being threatened, he added.

The murder of Gauri Lankesh, 55, the editor and publisher of the Gauri Lankesh Patrike newspaper, has raised fresh concerns about press freedom in India and triggered protests and widespread condemnation.

Hundreds of journalists and others across Gujarat paid tributes to Lankesh, condemned her murder and demanded a "proper inquiry" into the crime.

Gauri Lankesh was actively working with the Karnataka government to bring Naxalites into the mainstream, an initiative that hadn't gone down well with them, Indrajit said.

In an audacious attack, unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants pumped bullets into 55-year-old Gauri, known for her left-leaning outlook and forthright views against Hindutva politics, as she left her auto after reaching her home.

Since dusk, candlelight vigils were held in Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram.

Prasad, in his final tweet, demanded speedy action by Karnataka police over the murder, "I expect that Karnataka police will soon nab the killers of #GauriLakesh at the earliest at take action against them". Gauri, aged 55, had returned home in her auto and was opening the gate when motorcycle-borne assailants fired at her indiscriminately with two bullets hitting her in the chest and one on her forehead, police officials said.

This brutal murder of an outspoken journalist is a dastardly attack seeking to muzzle free speech and freedom of the press.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of silencing dissent, saying it was a part of their ideology. She had also earned the wrath of many so-called godmen and spiritual institutions for exposing sexual abuses in the name of "spiritual salvation". "The Chief Minister has said that those responsible would be caught and punished".
