The violence and civilian suffering have prompted worldwide condemnation and resonated particularly in many Muslim countries.

The government was working hard to ensure terrorism did not spread across Rakhine State, she added.

Aung San Suu Kyi also reiterated Modi's condemnation of terrorist activities and said, "Together, we will ensure that terror is not allowed to take root in our country, on our soil or in neighboring countries."Modi also said that he will be visiting the Ananda Temple in Bagan after the meet with Suu Kyi was over to check on the progress of the ongoing restoration work with Indian corporation after 2016 quake".

Myanmar has come under worldwide pressure after almost 125,000 Rohingya Muslims fled Rakhine after Rohingya insurgents attacked dozens of police posts and an army base. Last October, Rohingya insurgents attacked police, setting off an army operation that targeted Rohingya villagers. Rohingya Muslims have long faced discrimination in the majority-Buddhist Southeast Asian country.

But she's now the nation's de facto leader, and NBC News reports that her bloody crackdown on the minority Rohingya Muslim population has earned her criticism the world over.

The 18-year-old provided AP with cellphone photographs she took Tuesday along the beach in southern Maungdaw township in Rakhine state. Only some had tarps or umbrellas to protect themselves from the sun.

The UN children's agency UNICEF has said that 80 percent of Rohingya refugees are women and children and its workers are unable to reach twenty-eight thousand children in need of care.

The Nobel laureate assured Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan during a phone conversation on Tuesday that her government was working to protect the rights of the Rohingya, the report said.

"Many more children in need of support and protection remain in the areas of northern Rakhine State that have been wracked by violence", he said in a statement, adding that the United Nations refugee agency had no access to trouble spots in northern Rakhine state. "Our clean water and sanitation work has been suspended, as have school repairs that were under way".

On the issue, Modi said, "We share your concerns about extremist violence in Rakhine state & violence against security forces & how innocent lives have been affected".

The Rohingya Muslim ethnic minority in Rakhine has faced systematic persecution for decades at the hands of Myanmar's Buddhist majority, who consider a lot of them to be illegal immigrants from neighboring Bangladesh.

Guterres cited the longstanding history of "discrimination, hopelessness and extreme poverty" against Rohingya and warned about possible ethnic cleansing.
