Redskins safety Su'a Cravens talked out of retiring

Redskins change Su'a Cravens' mind about retiring for now

The Redskins placed Cravens on the team's exempt/left squad list Sunday after he told the team he was thinking of ending his career after just one season.

The 22-year-old Cravens, Washington's expected starter at strong safety, has been out since August 15 following knee surgery to fix a torn meniscus, but was expected to return to practice this week to prepare for the season opener September 10 against Philadelphia. He was one of the youngest players in the National Football League as a rookie last season. Washington officials want to help him through his issues rather than have him walk away from the game, which would make him one of the youngest National Football League players to date to retire.

In his first public comments since telling the Washington Redskins he was considering retirement, safety Su'a Cravens made it clear that you are either with him or against him. "I think I need to follow what makes me happy, get my mental right, my well-being right and my family right".

Redskins officials, when forming the 53-man roster on Saturday, went with five safeties (Cravens, Swearinger, Deshazor Everett, rookie Montae Nicholson and first-year pro Stefan McClure). "We're here to support him", Swearinger said.

"If it's family issues, personal issues, whatever he's dealing with, I'm supportive". You can hate me or love me.

Linebacker Mason Foster said he was surprised by the news. "Hopefully we'll be able to get him back at a later date, but if we don't have him back when we want to, at least he'll be in the room and still have a major influence on the team and the defense".

Football has always been a unsafe sport, but recent research has provided insight into how life-threatening the game can be. You all will really get to know me. He then had to undergo knee surgery back in August.

After practice, multiple players said coach Jay Gruden addressed the players about Cravens' situation and said to stay focused on the season opener when discussing it with the media.

Gruden was originally supposed to speak with reporters after practice Sunday, but that news conference was canceled and moved until Tuesday.
