Cabinet Reshuffle Dharmendra Pradhan Minister Who Convinced People To ‘Give It Up’ Gets Promoted

Government sources said the Prime Minister carried out the reshuffle considering performance and rewarding those with proven track record.

GIVING A major fillip to the BJP's third generation of leaders since the party was founded by A B Vajpayee and L K Advani in 1980, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday rolled out his third Cabinet reshuffle by naming Nirmala Sitharaman as Defence Minister, assigning the politically crucial Railways portfolio to Piyush Goyal and giving additional charge of Skill Development to Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Last month, after series of train accidents, Prabhu had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and offered to resign, but was asked to wait.

In his tweets, he congratulated the new ministers as well as those who had been elevated.

Nitin Gadkari, who was holding Road Transport and Highways and Shipping, will also head the Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Ministry.

While Modi has focussed on governance, he has also taken care of the BJP's political considerations.

Odisha is among the states high on the priority list of party chief Amit Shah for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Both have been made ministers of state (independent charge).

Minister of state for information and broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore was shifted to the sports ministry as minister of state (independent charge).

There were no changes in the portfolios of the big three - Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj and Rajnath Singh. The remaining six are Shiv Pratap Shukla (Finance), Ashwini Choubey (Health), Virendra Kumar (Social Justice and Minority Affairs), Anant Kumar Hegde (Skill Development), Gajendra Shekhawat (Agriculture) and Satyapal Singh (HRD & Water Resources).

Piyush Goyal has been given charge of the railway ministry.

New faces will be inducted into the Union Government today.

Two ministers Santosh Gangwar and Giriraj Singh have also seen a promotion as they are now MoS with independent charge of Labour and Employment and the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises respectively.
