Police arrest nurse who refused to draw blood

I've done nothing wrong: Utah nurse's arrest prompts police apology

Bodycam video has been released of the controversial July arrest of a Salt Lake City nurse for not allowing police to draw blood from a patient.

Payne verified to Wubbels the patient was not under arrest and he did not have a search warrant but wanted a blood draw as is allegedly department policy for any person involved in a motor vehicle crash. I said we're done!'

When Wubbels repeated the policy to the detective, he then grabbed her and said she was under arrest.

She said that patient consent or a police warrant were needed in order to take a blood sample.

According to Wubbels, she was taken out to the police cruiser and held for over twenty minutes before she was finally released.

Meanwhile, Salt Lake City police Detective Jeff Payne was suspended from the department's blood draw unit but still remains on duty as a detective in investigations in the midst of reviews by the department and a civilian review board. He says: 'No we're done, we're done - you're under arrest. Wubbels screams (the first time her composure breaks) as she's forced outside the hospital. When Wubbels does not budge, Payne is seen telling her she is under arrest: "We are done, we are done, you are under arrest". As for Wubbels, she has not taken legal action against the department just yet, but says she is, however, sharing her story in hopes that it will shine a light on the need for better relationships between medical professionals and police officers. "Stop! Stop! I've done nothing wrong!" Now, newly released video footage of the incident shows the woman being violently dragged and slammed before being placed in a police vehicle.

Also on Friday, Salt Lake City police Chief Mike Brown apologized for the incident in a news conference.

Wubbels' lawyer, Karra Porter, revealed that Wubbels was not charged once the detective realized that the blood was already drawn during treatment.

Payne, whose request did not get fulfilled, kept insisting and that led Wubbles to call several hospital officials, who repeated the same rule that she had already told him. "Just being bullied by police for any particular reason in a health care setting".

An internal investigation has been launched.

Alex Wubbels explained to Payne she couldn't draw blood because it would violate hospital protocol, but adding she would be happy to do so as soon as they got a warrant.
