The Earthquake Administration said in a statement on its website that the quake, which occurred around 3:30 GMT, was recorded at a depth of zero kilometres.

North Korea has said it successfully tested a hydrogen bomb created to be mounted on its newly developed intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), producing a greater yield than any of its previous nuclear tests.

There are concerns North Korea has conducted yet another nuclear test, despite repeated global warnings not to, after a magnitude 6.3 explosion was detected in the country.

Abe said he "would not tolerate" another nuclear test.

"President Moon Jae-in said the country will never allow North Korea to continue advancing its nuclear and missile technologies", Moon's key security adviser Chung Eui-yong said.

"It follows two such tests last year and more than a dozen missile tests this year".

The latest test seemed to bring North Korea a step closer to the goal of developing a nuclear-tipped ICBM capable of reaching the continental US.

South Korea's presidential office says the security chiefs for Seoul and Washington have spoken following North Korea's sixth nuclear test. There's speculation that such a test could come on or around the September 9 anniversary of North Korea's national founding, something it did a year ago.

"It shows that the state has the long-term will and determination to do it despite the costs", says Daniel Pinkston, a Korea expert at Troy University in South Korea, referring to the sanctions.

North Korea's news agency is claiming that the country has successfully loaded a hydrogen bomb onto an ICBM.

After suggesting that North Korea's leader "is starting to respect us", President Donald Trump on Wednesday returned to his tougher line.

Japan's foreign minister has confirmed the tremor was triggered by North Korea's nuclear test.

An natural disaster registering 6.3 was detected in the secretive state on Sunday 75km (45 miles) north-northwest of Kimchaek, where previous tests have been carried out.

North Korea's fourth test was in January 2016 when it claimed to have used a hydrogen bomb.

Earlier in the day, North Korea's official news agency (KCNA) reported that the Nuclear Weapons Institute has created a "more developed nuke", that can be fitted on an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

The same news outlet published images earlier Sunday showing leader Kim Jong-un inspecting a new H-bomb warhead.

China, North Korea's only major ally, condemned the test.
