Chris Froome's lead cut after he crashes twice on 12th stage

Trentin seals Vuelta treble Froome retains lead

Majka's Stage 14 triumph was his first of 2017's Vuelta and made him the second Polish rider to win one of this year's stages after compatriot Tomasz Marczynski triumphed on two occasions.

Froome countered Vincenzo Nibali's move on the final climb and widened his advantage over him by six seconds.

Majka, who came third overall in La Vuelta in 2015, joined a breakaway group of 10 riders 20km into the race and outlasted them all, burning away from Bart De Clercq, Rui Costa and Patrick Konrad in the final 10km, just before the climb kicked in, finishing 27 seconds ahead of Miguel Angel Lopez.

The Briton escaped with only minor injuries and leads Nibali by 59 seconds in the general classification with nine stages remaining. I had good legs and Patrick Konrad did a really good job with me in the break.

Since winning his first grand tour in 2013 Chris Froome delivered outstanding performances at different points in each of his first three Tour de France victories.

Of those in the top 16, the only change in GC position was with De la Cruz and Wilco Kelderman (Team Sunweb), with the latter going from fifth to forth and displacing the Spaniard.

Riders face another tough test in the southern mountains on Sunday. The Italian took his third win of the Vuelta so far, tightening his claws into a Green Jersey that now looks very likely to be his when the field comes into Spain on the 10th September.

Ahead, Julian Alaphilippe led the field into the last kilometre, where an animated Christ Froome could be seen urging Gianni Moscon to go for the Stage win, safe in the knowledge he would make it over the line unscathed ahead of tomorrow's special-category summit at Sierra de la Pandera.
