Cardinals could face Jacoby Brissett at QB in Week 2

Patriots Trades and Picks Ahead of Regular Season Deadline

Jacoby Brissett was traded by the Patriots to the Colts on Saturday afternoon. But this one-New England sending QB Jacoby Brissett to Indianapolis for WR Philip Dorsett, which has been confirmed by both teams-has significant ripple effects in the landscape of the 2017 National Football League season. The only concern is that the Patriots are left with only to Qb's, but that is nothing new for them, hell, a year ago they went into week 4 with Julian Edelman as the backup Quarterback.

Dorsett can absolutely fly.

The addition Dorsett - a 2015 first-round draft pick - addressed one of the few holes on offense for the defending Super Bowl champions, who have little turnaround time before hosting Kansas City in their regular-season opener on Thursday night. The Colts get a quarterback who made two starts during the 2016 season as a rookie after he was taken in the third round.

New England needed more depth at wide receiver after Julian Edelman suffered a season-ending torn ACL in the first quarter of a preseason game against the Detroit Lions on August 25.

Brissett was terrific in his final game as a Patriot.

In New England's preseason finale against the New York Giants on August 31, Brissett piled up 341 yards on 28-of-39 passing, four touchdowns and one interception in New England's 40-38 loss.

On paper, a trade involving a third-string quarterback during cut-down weekend might seem to be a minor transaction.

New England's trade with the Colts fills needs for both teams.

Instead, it appears as though holdover Quan Bray will remain the team's 5th wide receiver and handle primary special teams return duties. In his two seasons in Indianapolis, Dorsett had 51 receptions for 753 yards and three touchdowns for the Colts. However, when the Patriots acquire someone, there's always a good reason. The Colts have been overly secretive about Luck's progress from shoulder surgery. Their backup quarterback situation has been a mess.

Brissett's intangibles were widely viewed as impressive by several in the Patriots' organization.

How many more weeks Luck will be out beyond that remains a big question mark, though.
