Sindhu storms into final, Saina settles for bronze

PV Sindhu Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth into quarters at World Badminton Championships

Sindhu, a two-time World Championships bronze medallist, dominated her younger opponent from the beginning, not allowing the reigning world junior champion to settle in.

PV Sindhu vs Nozomi Okuhara final: After she settled for the silver at women's singles final of the World Badminton Championships on Sunday at Glasgow, in wake of a thrilling encounter, ace shuttler PV Sindhu was praised by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for her performance. Meanwhile, Okuhara defeated Saina Nehwal 12-21, 21-17, 21-10 in the semis.

Sindhu will go for her shots but she will need to stay patient against Okuhara. Their last meeting came earlier this year in Singapore, where the Indian won in three games.

The Indian, who now has won three World Championship medals, said there was no need to tinker with the format and scoring pattern to ensure short contests.

This has been India's best World Championship so far with two podium finishes for the first time in history. Stay tuned for the latest updates.

The Indian shuttler received a bye in the first round and had an easy outing in the second against Kim Hyo Min, who lost in straight games. Sindhu had, in fact, struggled to make it to the main draw of the singles competition for Rio, but some important points in major events before the Games gave her a spot.

4 Hyderabadi finished the game in just 48 minutes to reach the finals of this competition for the first time in her career.

Saina kept pace with her younger and sharper opponent but she got exhausted towards the end. In a hard fought rally, she finally succeeded in turning the second game in her favor 22-20. A net error stopped Okuhara's run as Sindhu held a 11-8 lead, which she extended to 18-16.

Notably, both the players showcased a superb game on the court in spite of the long rallies.

The Japanese grabbed the match point again when Sindhu found the net and she used it this time with a ideal return on Sindhu's backhand to seal the title. For Okuhara, the Saina match was a strenuous one and it will be interesting to see how well her body has recovered.

When it was done, almost two hours of sweat-soaked, adrenalin-charged, toe-to-toe, lung-busting, heart-wrenching badminton finished in the blink of an eye with a Nozumi Okuhara victor, PV Sindhu stood bent over double.
