Rex Tillerson keeps distance from Donald Trump's race row stance

Wow: Trump Secretary of State Throws Trump Right Under the Bus on Charlottesville

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson Sunday distanced himself - and the nation - from President Trump's response to the white supremacist violence in Charlottesville, Va. implying it's out of step with American ideals.

'Chris, we express America's values from the State Department, ' Tillerson answered.

In a discussion about the president's roundly condemned response to the violence in Charlottesville, Tillerson affirmed that the State Department represents American values. Tillerson specifically mentioned "the government's agencies" as holding up America's values, but when asked whether Trump does, too, he replied "the president speaks for himself, Chris".

"I don't think that anyone will doubt the values of the american people or of the determination of the us government" to "defend these values", he said during the television program Fox News Sunday.

Last week, a United Nations committee issued a warning to the United States about racism and hate crimes, saying USA leaders had not sufficiently condemned white supremacy.

Trump's statement condemning the "egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence, on many sides" in Charlottesville drew criticism that he was morally equating neo-Nazis with the individuals protesting against them.

Wallace asked Tillerson whether Trump's words in recent weeks had made it more hard to promote American values overseas. "It's simply important to say [.] hat we all know hate is not an American value", Tillerson said at the time.

Tillerson was the second White House official in recent days to appear to criticize Trump over his response to the Charlottesville clashes.

"It shows a lack of understanding of the President's broader policy when it comes to protecting Americans at home and overseas from all acts of terrorism", Tillerson said.

"We represent the American people, their commitment to freedom and to equal treatment to people the world over, and that message has never changed", he said.

But he preferred to refer to a speech delivered while the United States was in the midst of controversy, seeming to stand out of the president's stance. Wallace continued, referring to Trump's statements and how that might affect others' perceptions of USA values. Rogers, an expert on former Nicaragua dictator Daniel Ortega, stated that he sees similarities between the U.S. leader and Latin American presidents who stay in power for extended periods.
