How to tell if you damaged your eyes during solar eclipse

Eye Damage from the Solar Eclipse Eyes Hurt Solar Eclipse Solar Eclipse Eye Damage

Many Americans experienced a really incredible solar eclipse on Monday and a fair amount of them have since been complaining on Twitter. It is important to note there can be a delayed response to any damage incurred during an eclipse, with symptoms showing up hours later. But the reason we hear so much about the dangers of it during an eclipse is because, naturally, people's burning curiosity tempt them to look directly at the sun, even if it's just for a couple of seconds.

You looked at the sun too long -Now what?

If the cornea in the front part of the eye becomes sunburned, you can develop eye pain and light sensitivity, something known as solar keratitis.

"Solar retinopathy is not very common", said Dr. Jaime Membreno, an ophthalmologist at Retina Macula Specialists in Winter Park, Fla., in an email. Because there are no pain sensors in the actual eye damage can only be detected once it occurs.

If you damaged your eyes, you'll likely experience symptoms like altered vision today, but the odds are in your favor. According to the doctor, eye drops and rest should solve that problem.

"Sophisticated in-office diagnostic testing will need to be performed to determine if the retina has been damaged", said Dr. Jane Edmond, a pediatric ophthalmologist at Texas Children's Hospital.

Staring at the eclipse isn't advisable, but as long as you didn't do it for a long period of time, you probably don't have a whole lot to worry about. If you looked at the sun during the eclipse with your naked eye, you might suffer from some of these conditions.

Some of the symptoms to look out for are blurriness, a blind spot in your central vision, or a decrease in vision in which you notice an inability to read something you would have been able to read before the eclipse. It really depends on exactly what happened, and what kind of injury there is at the back of the eye.

Kokomo hospitals and optometrists said Wednesday they haven't yet received calls or drop-in visits from people concerned about their eyes after the United States' first coast-to-coast total solar eclipse since 1918. Even President Donald Trump was photographed apparently looking sunward at the eclipse without eye protection. If so, you may want to follow advice from Dr. Linda Chous, chief eye care officer for UnitedHealthcare. If you can't find eclipse viewers, build a pinhole projector to watch the eclipse.
