Apple's next self-driving phase is an employee shuttle

The Apple Car turns into an Apple Shuttle Bus

The new effort is called PAIL, short for Palo Alto to Infinite Loop which the street in Cupertino, California that Apple is located at, and a few miles from Palo Alto, California.

Apple is still "playing catch-up" with its self-driving auto technology, one person who's seen the tech says. But the company has reportedly since scaled back its autonomous-driving plans. The shuttle, which has never been reported before, will likely be a commercial vehicle from an automaker and will use it to test the autonomous driving that it develops.

This has been the trend in Silicon Valley where technology companies are embarking on autonomous driving technology while staying clear of manufacturing cars. But five people who have some sort of association with the venture told The New York Times there were "missteps" that caused the tech conglomerate to change course. With the upcoming release of the iPhone 8 Apple may be well on its well to a $1 trillion market cap that it could possibly reach at some point next year. Instead, the company has pivoted to focus on the software side.

A report in the New York Times claims that Apple is abandoning any hope of building an Apple Car, and has turned instead to working on the technology that powers autonomous vehicles and cars.

Google's project, now spun out into its own company called Waymo, is by many accounts the furthest along in self-driving technology. The name highlights the delays in the project, since Apple's main campus is already in the process of being moved to Apple Park, an enormous ring-shaped office down the road.

In June, Cook spoke about Apple's self-driving plans for the first time. "It's a core technology that we view as very important". Executive Steve Zadesky, originally in charge of Titan, preferred to build a semi-autonomous vehicle, much as Tesla has now. It is specifically seeking out people with autonomous vehicle software experience. There was fierce debate about whether it should be programmed using Swift, Apple's own programming language, or the industry standard, C++. The shuttle will transport employees from one building to another.

Apple's headlong foray into autonomous vehicles underscores one of the biggest challenges facing the company: finding the next breakthrough product. Apple has grown too big to be operated like a startup, moreover, the company is desperate to create the next big thing, as now, more than 50% of its profit comes from iPhone sales alone, which is in decline.
