Cubs Place Jon Lester on DL but Don't Expect Him Out Long

CHICAGO IL- AUGUST 17 Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Jon Lester pitches the ball during the game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago Cubs

In an inning of work, he allowed two runs on a hit and two walks, while striking out two.

It was Cincinnati's most productive inning since scoring 10 runs in August 2015 versus Detroit. He's managed a 5.40 ERA due in large part to a persistent home-run problem.

Losing Lester is the bigger blow, and the one that could prove most consequential to the Cubs' playoff chances. He's posted a 8-7 record, 4.37 ERA and 1.27 WHIP.

However, after visiting with a specialist, there's good news for Lester and the Cubs.

Starter Jon Lester didn't last past the second inning, giving up seven earned runs. Lester is a four-time All-Star, three-time World Series champion, NLCS MVP and Cy Young finalist. He signed a six-year, $155 million deal before the 2015 season. The Cubs could be seeing what is in store for the latter portion of Lester's career.

"There's no minimum or maximum, just that it's a 10-day stay and then we'll figure it out", Cubs manager Joe Maddon told reporters Friday of Lester's return. Lester was taken for examinations at Northwestern Memorial Hospital during the game.

The Cubs go into Friday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays with a one-game lead over Milwaukee and 1 1/2 games over St. Louis. Still, the Cubs will need their ace Lester down the stretch, as they're locked in a tight NL Central race.
