Ohio Man Accused of Ramming Car Into Crowd in Charlottesville Denied Bond

The suspect, James Alex Fields Jr. of OH, did not have the funds to hire a private attorney, but NBC 12 said that the local public defender could not represent him because he was related to one of Fields' alleged victims. At least 19 other people were injured.

But Trump drew criticism for not more directly condemning white nationalists after the Charlottesville incident. Beyond the death in the crash, clashes between white nationalists and counter protesters led to additional injuries. Counter-protestors arrived to fight the group, and Fields allegedly drove his vehicle into them, wounding 19 and killing one woman, Heather Heyer, 32.

Fields is facing charges in Virginia of second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and failure to stop after an accident.

Fields was photographed marching in the rally with a shield showing the Vanguard America logo hours before police said he rammed into the crowd. Fields lived in Maumee, Ohio, according to his mother.

Since Fields was named as the suspect, local media have identified him in images showing the OH resident attending the far-right rally and holding a shield emblazoned with the insignia of the "Vanguard America" hate group.

Authorities say Fields hit a crowd of counter demonstrators walking around the area of 4th Street and Water Street around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, August 12. He said he met with the FBI director and U.S. Attorney General, and the Department of Justice has opened a civil rights investigation. The Confederate statue of Robert E Lee was in the background. The group on Sunday denied any association with the suspect, even as a separate hate group that organized Saturday's rally pledged on social media to organize future events that would be "bigger than Charlottesville".

President Donald Trump addressed the nation Monday morning following the attack. The governor says "they are Nazis and they are here to hurt American citizens, and he needs to call them out for what they are, no question".
