Gillette Stadium a potential host for 2026 World Cup games

Tampa's Raymond James Stadium being considered to join bid for 2026 FIFA World Cup

Requests for information were sent to 44 cities across the three countries.

Included in the list were nine Canadian stadiums in seven cities: McMahon Stadium (Calgary); Commonwealth Stadium (Edmonton); Olympic Stadium (Montreal); Saputo Stadium (Montreal); TD Place (Ottawa); Mosaic Stadium (Regina); Rogers Centre (Toronto); BMO Field (Toronto); and B.C. Place (Vancouver). Twenty to 25 venues will be included in the official bid, which will be submitted to Federation Internationale de Football Association, soccer's worldwide governing body, in March.

Now, why are there so many more cities in the US listed, you ask? The joint North American bid would then go up against Morocco before the FIFA Congress to see which bid will host the cup. "The minimum requirement is 40,000 seats, so they do meet that requirement to be able to host a match and so, BC Place will definitely be the prime venue that Vancouver will be submitting". The United Bid Committee will trim the list by late September.

The United Bid Committee of the United States, Mexico and Canada has started its outreach for cities to declare their interest to serve as official official host cities for the World Cup.

Even though a Texas A&M scientist conducted a study at the Superdome proving ahead of the World Cup that natural grass could be grown well in indoor stadiums, soccer officials opted for the Silverdome. Even if a city isn't chosen to host a match, there could be other opportunities for it to be involved in the World Cup. Final bids are due in January 2018. The highly-regarded US -hosted tournament in 1994 had games across the country and adding games in Canada or Mexico isn't much of a shift.

"We were incredibly successful with the firm we brought in (Bush Turf), so that wouldn't be an issue", said Jenn Hathaway, spokeswoman for Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority, which oversees U.S. Bank Stadium.
