Venezuela's Maduro urges direct talks with Trump

Russian State Oil Company Rosneft Cuts Venezuelan PDVSA's Credit

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has said he wants a face-to-face meeting with US President Donald Trump.

The overture signaled a different approach for the defiant Maduro, who has delighted in publicly attacking the USA -and Trump in particular-for supposedly instigating protests against the regime.

He said he wanted the meeting، "if it can happen،" to be held when world leaders gather at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City on September 20.

In fact, an interesting one may be developing in Peru, which has organized a regional meeting of foreign ministers this week to discuss Venezuela. "Mr Donald Trump, here is my hand", he said.

Four U.S. Senate Republicans from oil refining states urged the Trump administration on Thursday to not block oil shipments from Venezuela as part of U.S. sanctions against the country, saying it could raise costs for U.S. fuel consumers.

David Smolansky is the fifth opposition mayor to be removed or jailed in little more than two weeks as President Nicolas Maduro attempts to consolidate his power by going after his enemies. The elections are now scheduled for December, though a new, all-powerful constitutional assembly could still cancel the vote.

In another move against officials lending material support to the violent opposition, Venezuela's Supreme Court of Justice called for the arrest of Mayor Ramon Muchacho of Chacao, the wealthiest municipality in Caracas.

More than 120 people have died in demonstrations against Maduro's rule since April.

Though the two countries are longtime allies, some in the Maduro opposition now say Russian Federation is exploiting Venezuela's problems to gain permanent leverage over the country.

'The legitimity of the Electoral Power has been recognized together with this National Constituent Assembly.

During this session, which took place in the Legislative Palace, Maduro gave a speech of approximately three hours and handed over his draft Constitution to the Constituent Assembly, claiming that it is the same as that of the late President Hugo Chavez (1999-2013), his predecessor.

The US has slammed Venezuela for the establishment of the National Constituent Assembly، where Maduro was speaking on Thursday.

The remarks came shortly after Maduro forcefully warned the US president that Venezuela "will never give in".

Experts say individual sanctions have had little or no impact on Maduro's policies and that broader oil-sector and financial sanctions may be the only way to make the Venezuelan government feel economic pain.
