North Korea frees ailing Canadian pastor from prison

Australia Ready to Back US, Will Join Any Conflict with North Korea

The federal government, which sent Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's senior adviser on foreign affairs to Pyongyang, was working behind the scenes and deserves credit for Lim's release.

North Korean officials said the pastor's health was not good and he was released on humanitarian grounds. Sweden's embassy in Pyongyang, which represents several Western nations in the insular nation, also helped, according to a statement from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"Operational security considerations prevent us from discussing the matter further", he added, asking the media to respect the family's privacy. His supporters have said he was on a humanitarian mission to North Korea when he was detained. ( ) The Blue House said the committee also made a decision to seek all measures to cooperate with the USA and other key countries to alleviate those tensions and bring peace to the Peninsula, reiterating that neither military escalation nor an armed conflict will benefit anyone.

North Korea also declared Trump "bereft of reason" while warning "only absolute force can work on him".

Pyongyang's already strained relations with Washington spiked to new levels of hostility after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened North Korea that it "will be met with fire and fury" if it threatens the U.S.

Raymond Cho, a member of parliament who knows Pastor Lim said he was relieved at his release. His family is arriving separately.

Officials in the Prime Minister's Office did not confirm any further details about Lim's release or when exactly he is expected to be back on Canadian soil.

Lim's family had become increasingly anxious about his welfare since the death of American student Otto Warmbier in June, just days after he had been released from a North Korean prison. Warmbier had been sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in March 2016 after being accused of stealing a propaganda poster. The circumstances of his death remain unclear.

Another politician who had campaigned for his release, Senator Yonah Martin said, 'I had a great sense of relief but it took me by surprise only because it had been so long'.

The European Council, which groups the EU member states, said they would also work on swift implementation of other parts of the United Nations resolution, including efforts to curb earnings sent home by North Koreans working overseas.

A Mississauga man who has been in detention in North Korea for the past two and a half years is finally coming home. The U.S. State Department said last week it would ban U.S. nationals from travelling to the isolated country from September.

The meeting was called after North Korea earlier this week declared that it will quote "seriously" examine an "enveloping strike" of Guam with four of its missiles, and will finalize a plan to do that by mid-August.
