US Military Allowed To Shoot Down Drones

If you have a drone, make sure you don't fly them too close to airports or military bases. All drone activities within the United States must follow Federal Aviation Administration rules and guidelines.

A drone is flown for recreational purposes in the sky above Old Bethpage, New York on August 30, 2015. The new shoot-down guidelines build on FAA restrictions put in place in April that restricted drone use over 133 military bases. The watchdog has forecast that US-based hobbyists will own more than 3.5 million drones by 2021, and that there could be a further 1.6 million commercial models in operation.

Earlier that year, a drone had landed on the lawn of the White House.

Drones that pose a threat can also now be seized. "Protecting our forces remains our top priority".

Last month, the U.S. Airforce requested to have the authority to take down drones.

Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain Jeff Davis said the various branches of the military received the new guidance on Friday, and this would be passed on to bases across the country.

Attacks by drones aren't the only thing that has the military concerned about the devices, however.

What Caused the U.S. Army to Create This New Policy?

Hackers have previously been able to breach the devices, altering security features. The measure saw USA military bases join a growing list of spaces other than airports where drones are banned from flying, including Beijing's Tiananmen Square. The military's engagement with drones "will depend upon the specific circumstances", he said.

The Pentagon has worked closely with the Dept. of Homeland Security on these measures and allows the military the options of using conventional weapons to shoot down a drone or other countermeasures include non-kinetic methods like the use of radio waves to disrupt drone flight.
