Manhunt in Missouri for Driver Who Fatally Shot Police Officer

Ian McCarthy 39 is a person of interest in the fatal shooting of Clinton Mo. Police Officer Gary Michael

According to KSHB and KMBC, Clinton police Officer Gary Michael, 37, stopped a "suspicious vehicle" for a possible registration violation at about 10:45 p.m. local time Sunday.

Authorities identified the suspect as 39-year-old Ian McCarthy from Clinton.

"In a small community, the police department is very tight-knit, so it's obviously devastating for the family and also for the police department", Lowe said.

Video from a second shop, Clinton Convenience Store, shows Mr. McCarthy's vehicle exiting the parking lot of the Everyday Convenience Store and driving toward the scene of the shooting.

The slain officer had been with the department less than a year.

A manhunt is underway after a rookie police officer was shot and killed at a traffic stop in Clinton, Missouri, police said.

'Every traffic stop is different. The officer was able to return fire, but police aren't sure if the suspect was struck. The suspect drove away but crashed and fled. The town of 8,800 is located about 75 miles southeast of Kansas City.

As Michael exited his vehicle in downtown Clinton, the alleged shooter also got out of his auto and fired once at the officer before fleeing the scene and crashing his vehicle into an embankment about four blocks away, Lowe said.

Tactical teams have cordoned off the area around the crash and are searching for the suspect Monday.

Michael returned fire, but McCarthy managed to get back into his vehicle and drive away, crashing the auto just two blocks west, officials said.
