Soldiers assault military base in Venezuela in 'attempted coup'

Earlier on Sunday, an online video showed a group of men in military uniforms saying they were launching an uprising against unpopular leftist President Nicolas Maduro.

He said any unit refusing to go along with its call for rebellion would be declared a military target. Solo le pido a Dios que lo proteja a él y a quienes lo siguen.

Since April more than 120 people have been killed in unrest as rock-throwing protesters were met by state security forces firing rubber bullets and water cannon.

Also on Saturday, an opposition leader, Leopoldo Lopez, was returned to house arrest after being detained in military prison for 4 days. Eighty percent of Venezuelans live in poverty, many are suffering from malnutrition, illness and outright hunger, inflation has risen to record levels, jails are filled with political prisoners, hospitals host an overpopulation of sick children, asylum requests have increased, and on top of all this, violence is more and more common.

Stacked with Maduro supporters, the 545-member Constituent Assembly is officially tasked with rewriting the country's constitution.

Former Venezuelan Foreign Minister and ANC President Delcy Rodriguez said the commission would be installed "for the sake of peace in our homeland", while speaking at the ANC's first session which was attended by more than 500 constituents. Cries of "traitor" and "justice" erupted during the vote to oust Luisa Ortega from her post.

One witness in the area of the military base in the town of Naguanagua reported hearing gunshots before dawn, but Mr Cabello said the situation had been brought under control.

Late Friday, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, an arm of the Organization of American States, issued a statement demanding that the Maduro government guarantee "the physical well-being" of Ortega.

She alleged that authorities were desperate to get their hands on dossiers containing information on dirty dealings by high-level officials, including sensitive details about millions of dollars in bribes paid by Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht.

Ortega has been replaced by Ombudsman Tarek Williman Saab, who was recently sanctioned by the USA for failing to protect protesters from abuses in his role as the nation's top human rights official.

"Venezuela is a divided country, it is a polarized country, and it will require a lot of vision and a lot of global support to sit down and have a dialogue that can find a solution", said Socorro.

Despite its pledge of "absolute" support to Maduro, the military is under strong pressure, blamed by the opposition for violently quelling protests and urged by it to switch sides.

Maduro and his Socialist Party have "completely taken hostage" Venezuela's institutions through "an undemocratic mechanism that is utterly dictatorial", the leader of the opposition-controlled legislature, Julio Borges, told reporters.
