Conrad Roy's Family Breaks Silence After Michelle Carter's Sentencing

The Woman Who Encouraged Her Boyfriend To Kill Himself Over Texts Could Be Sentenced Today

Carter, 20, was found guilty last month in connection to the 2014 death of Conrad Roy III. At the time, Carter was living in Plainville, Mass.; Roy was found dead about 50 miles away in a parking lot in Fairhaven, Mass., in a truck whose cab was filled with carbon monoxide by a generator.

He sentenced Carter to a 2 1/2-year jail sentence but said she had to serve only 15 months of that time.

When Carter, who was 17 years old and Roy's girlfriend at the time of his death, went on trial this summer, the prosecution argued that she was reckless and caused Roy's death by telling him to get back in the vehicle even though prosecutors said he didn't want to die. He granted a defense motion that will keep Carter out of jail until her appeals in state courts are exhausted.

Moniz repeated a statement by a prosecutor which he called "perhaps the most poignant comment in the trial" - "This is tragedy for two families".

Carter's lawyer, Joseph Cataldo, had asked the judge to spare his client any jail time and instead give her five years of probation and require her to receive mental health counseling.

"The case stems from the death of Roy in July 2014, when Carter was 17 and Roy was 18".

Bozzi said the most "unbelievable" part of Carter's actions was "how she acted after the fact". She sent him numerous messages encouraging him to commit suicide.

Carter, 20, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter after a contentious trial revealed hundreds of text messages in which she urged her boyfriend to take his own life. Carter then told him to get back into the vehicle.

"Don't be scared. You already made this decision and if you don't do it tonight you're gonna be thinking about it all the time and stuff all the rest of your life and be miserable", she wrote.

The prosecution lawyer called a sentence of between 7 and 12 years. She also mentioned that there should be amendments in the law to safeguard against those families abiding the same pain. "It exceeds the limits of our criminal laws and violates free speech protections guaranteed by the MA and U.S. Constitutions".

Cataldo said he's confident Carter eventually will be vindicated.

'I do believe she needs help and I do believe that she needs to take responsibility for her actions. Like I don't get why you aren't'.

"This is a bad, awful tragedy and she very much regrets this", said Joseph Cataldo, requesting five years of supervised probation attached to conditions such as mental health counseling. "I think she forced him to kill himself". "And there should not be any sentence handed down against Ms. Carter for involuntary manslaughter because her conviction for that crime is improper". "I really don't know what I'm waiting for. but I have everything lined up".
