Samsung's next LTE smartphone modem will support 1.2 Gbps download speeds

Samsung showcases 6CA LTE modem tech

Today, Samsung revealed that its next-generation mobile processors will include a new LTE modem that could achieve download speeds as fast as 1.2 Gbps.

Samsung Electronics' new modem technology is the first in the world to record a maximum downlink speed of one.two gigabites a second.

The theoretical 1.2Gbps speed is nice, but in real life you'd be lucky to get a fraction of that in North America. The 6CA technology will allow the combination of six frequency bands.

"With the increase of high-quality online content services, the demand for high-performance LTE modems continue to rise as well", said Woonhaing Hur, VP of LSI Protocol Development.

Earlier this year Samsung presented its new flagship Exynos 9 Series (8895) mobile chip, the first mobile processor in the industry to integrate a gigabit LTE modem which supports 5CA (Carrier Aggregation) for downlink, allowing for there to be multiple data streams at once. It will also enable buffer-less video calls and mobile live-broadcasting.

The new LTE modem was developed in partnership with Anritsu, a telecommunication measuring instrument provider.

Samsung's new technology supports 4~CHECK~4 MIMO (Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output) and higher-order 256 QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) scheme to maximise the data transfer rate. Samsung's 6CA modem technology can bundle up to 6 frequency bands, enabling fast and stable data communication.

It can also use enhanced Licensed-Assisted Access to aggregate licensed and unlicensed spectrum, such as that used by Wi-Fi.

It is expected to go into mass production by the end of this year.
