One dead, several injured in machete attack in Germany

Hamburg knife attack At least one dead in Germany

The miscreant soon after the attack reportedly escaped but was later nabbed by the police.

A statement Friday does not identify the man further and says police are still working to establish what nationality he has.

A knife-wielding man killed one person and injured four others at a supermarket in Hamburg, Germany, on Friday, local police said.

The supermarket where the attack took place is located in Barmbek, a northeast neighborhood in the northern port city of Hamburg.

Zill said he had no information as to the man's motive.

Speculation in German media said the attack may have been part of a robbery attempt but police said that that motive could not be confirmed. Witnesses followed him and alerted police, who arrested him near the scene.

Several people suffered stab injuries and one of the victims was fatally wounded, officers added.

Mass circulation newspaper Bild said that authorities had triggered a terror alarm and carried a photo of a man with a blood-stained bag over his head sitting in the back of a police auto.
