The Last Killer Whale Born In Captivity At SeaWorld Has Died

Kyara was the last to be born at a SeaWorld park.

The water park said during the few months of Kyara's life, she touched everyone that came in contact with her.

The last killer whale born in captivity under SeaWorld's former orca-breeding program has died at the company's San Antonio park.

A dedicated team of vets and care staff spent the last three days providing critical care for Kyara, but despite their best efforts the whale passed away.

A news release from SeaWorld indicated Kyara's cause of death wasn't immediately determined, but she was suffering from an infection that was likely pneumonia. A post mortem exam would be conducted to determine the cause of death of the orca calf, which will be followed by a statement by SeaWorld San Antonio.

Takara is reported to be doing fine over the weekend along with the rest of the orca pod. It may take several weeks before results are finalised.

"Forty orcas have now died on SeaWorld's watch-it's time for the abusement park to move the remaining animals to seaside sanctuaries before the death toll hits 41", PETA Vice President Colleen O'Brien said in the statement. Kyara's mother, Takara, was pregnant when the company announced in 2016 that it would phase out the killer whale breeding program in its three parks. SeaWorld said it is monitoring the health of its other killer whales for any signs of illness.

Tilikum, 35, became notorious for the deaths of three people during his time in captivity, featuring heavily in the £50,000, low-budget documentary "Blackfish" that went on to earn global acclaim by highlighting the incredulity of keeping highly social, extremely intelligent whales in captivity.
