Taliban take control of another district in Afghanistan

Afghanistan

The Associated Press reported the Taliban launched four assaults on the district headquarters early Sunday, pushing forces from the compound.

"A member of parliament fought back in that district until it collapsed, the forces also resisted and sustained casualties", said CEO Abdullah Abdullah.

The district, laying in north of provincial capital Lashkar Gah city, has been the scene of heavy clashes between security forces and Taliban since early Thursday after Taliban attacked security checkpoints with suicide auto bombs and heavy weapons.

The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), a USA watchdog, estimates that the Taliban controls 11 districts and has influence over 34 of Afghanistan's 407 districts (11 percent), while the Afghan government controls 97 districts and influences 146 (60 percent).

Ghor governor said that the Taliban killed a number of doctors and employees of Taywara district after seizing control of the area.

Khpolwak says the buses were travelling from Kandahar's Shah Wali Kot District to neighboring Uruzgan province when they came under attack. Among the Taliban fighters killed in fighting in Helmand's Gereshk district was Taliban leader Haibatullah Akhunzada's 25-year-old son Hafiz Abdur Rahman Khalid, according to Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

Banned militant outfit the Taliban took control of a district in Ghor province in Afghanistan, after an earlier seize on the same day of a district in the northern part of the country, an official source said. Mewanwhile, in northern Badakhshan province Gov. Ahmad Faisal Bigzad said on July 22 that that 11 police were killed and another six wounded during a roaring battle with Taliban insurgents in the remote Tagab region. The remaining 33 are still being held by insurgents.

The Taliban has not yet claimed responsibility for the kidnappings. Taliban have in the past exaggerated their successes and the remoteness of the area makes it near impossible to independently verify.

The Taliban have launched dozens of attacks in northern Afghanistan in recent days, temporarily closing a major highway between the region and the capital, Kabul.
