Decline in global funding threatens search for HIV vaccine

2.1 million HIV cases in India, 50% drop in new infections in past decade: UNAIDS report

Further, globally AIDS-related deaths have nearly halved since 2005. The report includes more than one detailed analysis of the progress and challenges to achieve the '90-90-90 Targets, ' which establish that 90 percent of the HIV people know their serologic situation, receive continual antiretroviral therapy and have the possibility to access viral suppression.

According to the report, in just the last two years the number of people living with HIV on antiretroviral therapy has increased by about a third, reaching 17.0 million people, 2 million more than the 15 million by 2015 target set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011.

People who inject drugs accounted for 42 percent of new HIV infections in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, the report said.

More than half of HIV-infected people are now on life-saving treatment.

Although relatively large increases in new infections occurred between 2010 and 2015 for Jordan, Kuwait and Qatar, the absolute number of new infections remains very small, in part because estimates from these countries are for citizens and exclude temporary migrant workers and other foreign nationals. New HIV infections have declined by 29%, including a 56% drop in new infections among children over the same period.

"For more than 35 years, the world has grappled with an AIDS epidemic that has claimed an estimated 35 million lives." the report said.

Rising levels of resistance to HIV drugs could undermine promising progress against the global AIDS epidemic if effective action is not taken early, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday.

Young people, who are at particular risk of HIV, are also falling behind - on knowledge of HIV, on HIV testing, and on treatment and prevention.

Unaids is concerned that in contrast to the explosion of the epidemic in eastern Europe and central Asia: the number of deaths has climbed by 27% in six years and the number of new infections has soared by 60%.

Tawil said that the incidence of drug use is high in many countries in the region including Myanmar, India, Nepal, Indonesia and Pakistan, adding that it is often the result of economic problems as well as the availability of drugs at low prices.

New infections are declining, but not fast enough.

"The region has achieved remarkable progress in expanding HIV services", said UNAIDS.

This incredible progress is due to the global partnership and commitment of governments, civil society groups, health workers and local and worldwide organizations, along with support from major donors and organizations including the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), UNAIDS and WHO.

The report notes that about three-quarters of pregnant women with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, now have access to medicines to prevent them from passing it to their babies.
