Two tourists were killed and four others were injured Friday in a knife attack in Egypt's Red Sea resort town of Hurghada, Egyptian state-run news agency Al-Ahram reported.

The attacker appears to have swum from a nearby public beach to gain access to the resort, officials say.

Abdelaziz said two of the injured were Czech and two Armenian and were being treated at a local hospital.

The assailant is arrested, he is being questioned to determine the motives of the crime.


The dead were first identified as Ukrainian, but Major General Mohamed El-Hamzawi, Red Sea region's security manager, later said they were German. It gave no further details and did not provide the nationalities of the tourists.

Egypt is fighting Islamist insurgents in the Sinai Peninsula where they mainly target security forces but militants have also attacked tourism targets as well as Coptic Christians and churches.

The assault came just hours after five policemen were killed in a shooting near some of Egypt's most famous pyramids outside of Cairo.
