Defending champion Andy Murray cruises into Wimbledon quarterfinals

Jo Konta will play Carolina Garcia in the fourth round of Wimbledon on Monday

Indeed, the fact that of six singles tournament games played on SW19's two show courts yesterday, only two were between women did not pass unnoticed.

Konta had the momentum but Garcia is too good a player simply to be overwhelmed.

CoCo Vandeweghe is into the quarterfinals at Wimbledon for the second time after defeating fifth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki 7-6 (4), 6-4 on No. 3 Court.

The former number 1, bidding to clinch her 29th top 5 win, the first since 2016 Miami, barely avoided the bagel before saving a match point and breaking to 2-5 with a clean volley, her 20th victor of the match.

As for Halep, well, she is a serious operator. It comes exactly a week after ticketholders saw two successive matches on the same court finish in the second set as players retired hurt.

A two-time grand slam bridesmaid, Halep insists her focus is firmly on winning Wimbledon, not the top ranking.

Konta refuses to use that as motivation even though Halep and her team were not overly sympathetic.

The match finished however on a sour note, as a prolonged scream from someone in the crowd distracted Halep enough to dump a lame looking forehand into the net.

Halep looked at the umpire, seemingly hoping to have the point replayed. Because he said, We can not replay. I would say it's taking the marquee matches. In my opinion, the public was very fair. When I watch at my dad, I just want to catch his eye, nothing more. But the rest was nice atmosphere. I'm playing against an incredibly tough opponent next.

Djokovic said: "During the match I mentioned it to the umpire - there is a hole in the middle of the court on the service line".

There is also likely to be a personal edge to Tuesday's contest after Halep accused Konta of gamesmanship during their Fed Cup tie in April.

"She's definitely playing with confidence in the Slams".

But sixth seed Konta said: "My next battle is all I have got my mind on". I was trying to stay light on my feet and strong in my body to try to neutralise her balls. That's why when I think of those with the best drop shots they all tend to be modern players. I continued to trust in the fact that what I was doing was going to bring me good things.

While the likes of Dominic Thiem and last year's runner-up Milos Raonic have impressed and Marin Cilic is playing some of the best tennis of his career, it would be a huge surprise to see none of the 'big four' lifting that famous trophy aloft next Sunday afternoon.

Garcia, in an interview with French sports newspaper L'Equipe, defended herself when she said she felt she was showing her patriotism every time her country's name appeared by her own at tournaments.
