Saudi, allies threaten more measures against Qatar

U.S. Secretary of State Tillerson makes a speech during the opening ceremony of the 22nd World Petroleum Congress in Istanbul

In their apparent bid to win more support from the United States and Israel, the Arab countries have suspended all land, air and sea traffic with Qatar, expelled its diplomats and ordered Qatari citizens to leave their countries.

Jarallah made his remarks after meeting Wednesday with Johnson in London, adding that they both reviewed developments of the Gulf dispute since its beginning, as well as Kuwait's efforts aimed at bridging the gap and reaching a solution to the root causes of the dispute.

They vowed to take further political, economic and legal steps to tighten the screws on Doha.

In the meantime, British Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa Alistair Burt highly commended on Wednesday the mediation efforts by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah aiming to resolve the Gulf crisis.

Riyadh:Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain say they are ready to adopt more punitive measures against Qatar, following Doha's rejection of their demands to end an ongoing feud.

On June 22, they issued a 13-point list of demands, including downgrading ties with Iran and shutting down broadcaster Al Jazeera, as a prerequisite to lift the sanctions, which include the closure of Qatar's only land border and suspension of all flights to and from the country. That might have a negative impact on Qatar's sovereign credit fundamentals.

Despite threats from the Arab quartet, petroleum and gas-rich Qatar remains defiant and confident that it can survive the isolation, especially after receiving assurances of support from Turkey and Iran.

Gargash added: "The Qatari response attempted to neglect two decades of supporting chaos, financing extremism and inciting terrorism; how can we forget conspiracy and painful facts, and believe empty words?" Qatar has denied the allegations, and has characterized the bloc's ultimatums as an affront to its sovereignty. Washington counts all five countries as important Mideast allies, and stations some 10,000 troops at a sprawling air base in Qatar that is vital for the campaign against the Islamic State group.

Meanwhile, Qatar has rejected those accusations. He is expected to visit Qatar and Kuwait during his trip.
