No Modi-Xi meeting at G20 Summit, says India

Nehru blamed China for illegal claiming of Doka La in 1959

It seeks to browbeat New Delhi in the hope that the latter will back down and defer to Beijing's growing might.

Separately, an editorial on Thursday, in state-run tabloid GlobalTimes, proposed that, "China should lead the worldwide community in restoring Bhutan's diplomatic and defence sovereignty", insinuating that India had constrained free expression of Bhutan's political will.

According to the Chinese interpretation of events, Indian soldiers crossed into China's Donglang region early in June and obstructed work on a road on the plateau.

The current faceoff has different strategic dimensions.

China appeared frustrated that India refused to sign on this year to its continent-wide "One Belt, One Road" infrastructure initiative, which includes a component in Pakistan and a part of Kashmir that is contested by India.

"This endangers China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and damaged the political foundations of bilateral relations between China and India", Geng said.

India's Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre says a military stand-off with China along a contested part of the border in the Himalayas can be resolved diplomatically.

Chinese state-run tabloid, Global Times, in an editorial piece said, "New Delhi imposed a similar coercive policy on Sikkim, as they are doing with Bhutan - deposed the king of Sikkim in 1975 and manipulated the country's parliament into a referendum to make Sikkim a state of India".

Meanwhile, China on Wednesday accused India of "trampling" on the Panchsheel principles and asked New Delhi to "correct its mistakes" as soon as possible by pulling back troops.

India has said Beijing's action to "unilaterally determine tri-junction points" is in violation of a 2012 India-China agreement.

Claiming that India has "startling control and oppression over Bhutan", the editorial said that the country has a similar effect on Sikkim as well. A PLA spokesperson later commented that the Indian Army Chief's remark that "India is ready for a two-and-a-half front war", was extremely irresponsible. The Indian military is today a more confident and better equipped and trained force than it was in 1962.

"China has always taken this seriously and done a lot to this end". The military build-up in the South China Sea has made the Indians even more suspicious of all Chinese military manoeuvres. The recent statement by Lu Kang, the Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, that "The diplomatic channel for communication remains unimpeded".

"It is the Indian side that trespassed into Chinese territory and changed the status quo", he alleged.

Beijing has warned New Delhi to immediately and unconditionally withdraw its troops before initiating any attempt at resolution between the two sides. India believes it could stand up to China and it will.

Ambassador Luo said he was deeply anxious by the "grave" situation in Doklam.
