Tomic facing fine after controversial admission in wake of Wimbledon exit

Wimbledon

WA's highest ranked tennis player of all time says her biggest issue with Bernard Tomic is the influence his attitude could be having on Australian children.

"While I do feel a bit of guilt and I'm like, maybe I could have played four or five sets", Tomic said, "in my opinion, he played well and I was just playing awful and I just couldn't find any rhythm, and he deserved to win".

"I feel holding a trophy or, you know, doing well, it doesn't satisfy me any more".

The Australian's post-match press conference was infinitely more entertaining than his straightforward 6-4 6-3 6-4 defeat by Mischa Zverev on an outside court.

"I wasn't mentally and physically there - I don't know why", Tomic told assembled reporters, swiveling around in his chair. It's not there. I couldn't care less if I make the fourth round US Open, or I lose the first round. To me, everything is the same. I know I'm going to play another ten years, and I know after my career I won't have to work again.

"I don't know why, but I felt a little bored out there to be completely honest with you", Tomic said. "Maybe I have to look at a few things, maybe play less tournaments". For sure I don't do the right work. While Tomic, also known as "Bernard, the Tank Engine", was accused of giving up at the Madrid Open a year ago, when he tried to play match point by holding the racquet upside-down, Kyrgios has been suspended and fined by the ATP for tanking, essentially not trying hard enough. I'm still 24 and it was tough to find motivation out there.

That's what the world is questioning after a freaky post-match press conference at Wimbeldon, where he's admitted he feels "bored" with tennis and has lost respect for the game. I'm 24. I have done, came on tour at 16, 17. Was it because he lost his first-round match to 27th seed Mischa Zverev at Wimbledon?

Nick Kyrgios, Andrew Whittington and John Millman all lost on Monday.

The only other time in the Open Era (since 1968) when no Australian men made it through to the Wimbledon second round was in 2012.

Kokkinakis was dismissive of the suggestion that there may be an institutional problem in Australian tennis.

The 24-year-old former top-20 player then said he was only playing tennis for the money. One of them, Janko Tipsarevic, played just five games for 12 minutes before quitting.

"Hopefully he can get it together because he's a really good player, especially when he's switched on", he said.

Here to ensure the Australian team did not fall into unwanted Wimbledon history, was Arina Rodionova.

He has not advanced as far as the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam event since losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in 2011 — when at 18 he became the youngest man to reach the final eight at Wimbledon since Boris Becker defended his title in 1986.
