Half of US Citizens Trust CNN More Than Trump

Poll Majority of Americans say civility has declined since Trump elected

Fourth of July heralds fireworks, hot dogs and overt displays of American patriotism but a new poll suggests that Americans not only doubt the loyalty of their compatriots but also that increasing numbers of Republicans are convinced that criticizing President Donald Trump to foreigners is incompatible with flag-waving, tub-thumping national pride.

In a dig against its own relevance, the Marist/NPR poll found Americans on both sides of the political spectrum have little trust in opinion polling. A full 82 percent of Republicans and 83 percent of Independents correctly identified Great Britain, while 72 percent of Democrats got the answer right, according to the data.

Uncle Sam conducts an unofficial straw poll outside Des Moines, IA on January 31, 2016.

This survey comes on the heels of the latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll that also showed similar partisan divisions, noting that only 30 percent of Americans have some degree of trust in the media, a number that plunges to 9 percent among Republicans. Ten percent said they did not trust the Trump administration. Meanwhile fifteen percent were "unsure" and eight percent named another country.

Also, 61 percent of respondents said they don't trust polls. The figure is a small decrease from the 2013 figure, when 46 percent of Americans thought their countrymen and countrywomen were becoming less patriotic. Sixty-nine percent correctly listed 1776, but nineteen percent said they were unsure and eleven percent named a different year. Seventeen percent say America has gone too far in expanding that right compared to 26 percent who say it's being restricted too much.

The poll was conducted among 1,205 respondents between June 21 and June 25.

The survey has a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.

According to a YouGov poll, more than half (53 percent) of Republicans think those expressing criticism of the president to non-Americans aren't patriotic, while only one third think the opposite is true.

More people continue to question the mental health of U.S. President Donald Trump after he tweeted sexist remarks about "Morning Joe" host Mika Brzezinski and the fake CNN wrestling video.
