Qatar responds to demands of Arab nations

The decision was made at the request of the emir of Kuwait, which has been acting as a mediator, after he received a letter from Qatar's foreign minister.

That's according to the state-run Kuwait News Agency, which reported Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani's arrival on Monday in Kuwait City.

The agency Monday said the four countries; namely Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Egypt; agreed upon Kuwait's request to postpone the deadline originally taking effect on Sunday by two days.

On June 27, during a visit in Washington, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir called the demands non-negotiable.

Later, the four countries placed on terrorism lists 59 people and 12 groups with alleged links to Qatar.

Some of the key demands include shut down the Al Jazeera media network and its affiliates, halt the development of a Turkish military base in the country and reduce diplomatic ties with Iran.

"There is no fear. Qatar is prepared to face whatever consequences", he told reporters.

Trump spoke individually with Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz, Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan and Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani about the contentious relationship between the Middle East nations.

Qatari officials say the demands are so strict that the four countries never seriously intended them as a negotiating position and see them as being aimed at hobbling Doha's sovereignty.

Trump reiterates the next day that financing for terrorism must stop.

Earlier in June, 10 countries have cut their ties to Qatar over allegations of funding terrorist groups and destabilizing the region, a claim that Qatar repeatedly denied.

Saudi Arabia and its three Arab allies have given Qatar additional 48 hours to accept their demands as the initial deadline expired on Sunday.

The summit brings together leaders including President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Qatar's Gulf critics accuse Al Jazeera of being a platform for extremists and an agent of interference in their affairs.

Foreign ministers of nations boycotting Qatar will meet in Cairo on Wednesday to discuss their next steps.
