Trump says he is sending federal help to quell Chicago violence

The Strike Force became operational June 1, 2017, and consists of 20 additional permanent ATF special agents, 6 intelligence research specialists, 12 task force officers from the Chicago Police Department (CPD), 2 task force officers from the Illinois State Police, and 4 NIBIN specialists (National Integrated Ballistics Information Network).

Crime and killings in Chicago have reached such epidemic proportions that I am sending in Federal help. Roughly 40 ATF agents have already been working with local and state police on reducing gun violence in the city.

The government is sending gun investigators to Chicago and plans to prosecute firearms cases aggressively, Attorney General Jeff Sessions told Fox News when asked about Trump's statement about the plan in an early-morning Twitter post.

"Six months ago we made it clear that we would welcome additional federal support, and six months later we appreciate the 20 new ATF agents that are now arriving", Collins said in an email.

Chicago police officials said the unit would focus on preventing illegally possessed guns from flowing through the city and on targeting people repeatedly involved in gun crimes, both of which have always been cited as drivers of the violence.

Trump's latest tweet said there have been 1,714 shootings in Chicago this year.

"The police have been demoralized in many ways", he said. As of Thursday, 320 murders had been committed in Chicago this year, two less than at this same point in 2016. The 2016 homicide rate of 27.7 murders per 100,000 was the city's highest since the mid-1990s.

"No child in America should have to walk the streets of their neighborhood in fear of violent criminals, and yet in Chicago, thousands of children do every day".

Sessions has faced criticism for not including Chicago on a list of cities that will receive guidance from the Department of Justice (DOJ) about long-term strategies to fight violence. And police, federal agents and prosecutors will reportedly target repeat gun offenders and illegal firearms.

Chicago is a shooting disaster-they should immediately go to STOP AND FRISK.

" to intervene if Chicago was unable to curb its gun violence, it was unclear what he meant". Our federal partners from the US attorney's office, the ATF, the FBI need to be much more invested in this overall strategy.
