United States wants to work with China despite new sanction

США объявили о введении санкций против Китая

"The Department of the Treasury is committed to protecting the US financial system from North Korean abuse and maximizing pressure on the government of North Korea until it abandons its nuclear and ballistic missile programs", Steven Mnuchin, the Treasury secretary, said.

The department also sanctioned two Chinese individuals said to have established front companies to facilitate financial transactions for North Korea, and a Chinese shipping company accused of helping smuggle banned luxury goods into the country. "We are committed to targeting North Korea?s external enablers and maximizing economic pressure on the regime until it ceases its nuclear and ballistic missile programs", he said.

Mnuchin said this is part of its efforts against North Korea.

The US Treasury said North Korea continues to try to evade global sanctions in pursuit of its weapons program.

The Trump administration has blacklisted a Chinese bank accused of illicit dealings with North Korea.

Photo Steven Mnuchin, the Treasury secretary, discussed the sanctions in a briefing at the White House on Thursday.

The U.S.is weighing more aggressive efforts after U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defense Secretary James Mattis held a summit with their Chinese counterparts last week and as Trump has publicly shown signs of frustrations with the current approach - with a focus on the role he had hoped China would play.

The comment came shortly after the death of Otto Warmbier, a USA citizen who was detained in North Korea for more than a year and returned to his parents in a coma.

Trump was heaping economic and diplomatic pressure on Pyongyang "in order to change their calculus", the official said.

"The campaign is only now really gathering momentum", the official said.

The United States has, for the first time on Thursday, announced financial sanctions against a chinese bank accused of conducting illicit activities with North Korea "to put pressure" on the regime in Pyongyang. "We continue to work with them", he said.

"This is not directed at China, this is directed at a bank, as well as individuals and entities in China", Mnuchin told reporters.

The sanctions come as the USA pushes for China, North Korea's largest trading partner, to exert more pressure on Pyongyang.

'While I greatly appreciate the efforts of President Xi & China to help with North Korea, it has not worked out.

"The question for me all along was, 'When is Trump going to realize that Xi Jinping is not going to deliver for him and when he realizes that, what is his response going to be?' The former has happened and now we're awaiting to see - does this mean he pulls off the gloves?"
