Trump to meet with Putin at G-20 summit next week

Family is high on Russia's agenda

The White House has confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet for the first time on the sidelines of the Group of 20 (G20) summit in Hamburg, Germany, next month.

Trump's early warmth toward Putin - and his blunt criticism of America's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies for not spending enough on defense - have rattled many in Europe, and particularly in places like Ukraine and the tiny Baltic countries.

Some of Trump's advisers had encouraged him to stage formal bilateral talks with the Russian leader in a sign that he's serious about warming the relationship between Washington and Moscow.

Trump's National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster said Putin would be among the "many world leaders" meeting the United States president during the summit, taking place on July 7 and 8.

The format for Trump and Putin's meeting at the G20 has not yet been set.

That has included some types of sanctions relief and the potential return of two properties in the United States to Russian control, according to two administration officials. He said he got to know Putin "very well" when they both appeared - in separate segments - on an episode of "60 Minutes" and that they had communicated "directly and indirectly".

Those relations reached a post-Cold War low under Trump's predecessor, Obama.

"Our relationship with Russian Federation really isn't different", added McMaster, who did note that Trump would discuss "irritants" with Putin when the pair finally meets next week in Germany. "It won't be right, I guess, if they aren't able to talk there and to discuss a lot of issues".

Lavrov said any such meeting would see the presidents address "several questions" but did not elaborate, save to add that "above all, we must normalise dialogue" between Moscow and Washington. "Washington's view has been distorted by the hatred against Russian Federation that engulfed numerous politicians".
