Brazil's attorney general formally accuses Temer

Temer is suspected to have participated “with vigour” in cases of corruption

But Temer, in his first comments since arriving back from a trip to Russian Federation and Norway, said that he had no intention to step down.

Criminal charges against Brazilian President Michel Temer are the latest blow to a reform agenda created to jump start Latin America's largest economy, as the nation's capital prepares for another drawn out political showdown.

However, Temer has pleaded not guilty and has vowed to prove his innocence.

Opposition parties have been demanding snap elections and his impeachment, the BBC said. He is expected to file those charges at a later date. The document sent to the Supreme Court states that Temer received 500,000 reais ($151,000) between April and March 2017 from Batista via an intermediary.

Brazil's President Michel Temer calls the corruption charges against him a "soap opera" and accuses the country's top lawyer of seeking "revenge".

Temer will be suspended from office for up to 180 days if two thirds of the 513 members of the Chamber of Deputies vote against him and the Supreme Court agrees.

So far, his presidency has been unpopular, with his approval rating in the single digits.

In the recording, Temer was heard saying after being informed that hush money was being paid to the former head of the lower house of Congress, Eduardo Cunha, "Look, you've got to keep that up". Speaking in a plea-bargain testimony, executives said the president took bribes for resolving tax matters, freeing up loans from state-run banks and other matters.

Executives at JBS, a Batista company, testified that Mr. Temer had negotiated millions of dollars in illegal campaign donations for his Brazilian Democratic Movement Party. Plea bargain testimony from Palocci, once one of Brazil's most powerful politicians, could widen the scope of investigations now focused on engineering firms to include banks and other corporations. Temer is not alone.

Temer and one-third of his cabinet, along with four former presidents and dozens of lawmakers are under investigation or have already been charged.

Key lawmakers in Temer's alliance told Reuters, on condition of anonymity, they will halt work on proposed labour reforms if forced to vote on charges against the president.

Brazil's President Michel Temer waves as he exits after attending a ceremony at the Planalto Presidential Palace, in Brasilia, Monday, June 26, 2017.

But the accusations themselves have roiled Brazilian politics since the details that underpin them began to emerge last month, raising questions about whether Temer will be able to finish out his term, which ends next year.

"We are looking into the possibility of conducting joint space launches from Brazil's launching site, as well as of constructing small- and medium-lift launch vehicles".

Financial markets regard the measures, which include an unpopular overhaul of Brazil's generous pension system, as crucial to restoring the country's battered fiscal credibility.

Temer's office and his attorney, Antonio Mariz, have refused to comment on the charges.
