PAHO: Voluntary blood donors still short of ensuring sufficient supplies

By	Gary Mc Kinn

Every year, on June 14, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD).

Aigboje Ikhuoria reports that some residents in Benin City donated blood as part of the commemoration of the day.

Dr. Adewunmi said: "Blood touting is outlawed in all federal and state teaching hospitals, but we still find them operating in corners, which has caused a high demand for commercial donors".

Acting chief secretary Y. Tsering has lamented shortage of supply of blood to the meet the emergency needs due to the misconceptions of people about donating blood.

Wednesday is World Blood Donor Day, and one Northwest suburban man chose to mark it in an appropriate way.

"Schools are really the main place where we collect our blood", Colin Williams with the Phoenix Red Cross said.

A rather surprising fact about blood donation according to World Health Organization is that a single unit of blood can benefit several patients.

In every country, including the United Kingdom, there's a vital need to maintain a regular supply of all blood groups and types, so it's available to patients when it's needed. The unavailability of blood has led to deaths and many patients suffering from ill-health.

Crucially, Nepal already had a substantial supply of blood when the quake struck, thanks to years of work to build a culture of voluntary blood donation. "Within some days we would issue the licenses to these hospitals", she said. The blood that we donate is also stored at the blood bank after their usage and used in future when needed.

The situation implies that in times of disasters when immediate blood transfusion is required to save the lives of victims, the service does not have any laid down mechanism to follow through to execute their duty.

Mr Smith started out donating whole blood, but he has since moved to giving plasma, which he does about every two weeks.

You must be above 18 years of age. The campaign promotes global collaboration and to ensure worldwide dissemination of and consensus on the principles of voluntary non-remunerated donation, while increasing blood safety and availability.
