Federer thrashes Zverev to win ninth Halle title

TENNIS-ATP-GER

Top seed Roger Federer will challenge for a ninth Halle Open title after reaching the Wimbledon warm-up event final with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory over rising Russian talent Karen Khachanov yesterday.

Roger Federer has beaten Florian Mayer for an eighth time without a loss to knock the defending champion out of Germany's Halle Open in the quarter-finals 6-3 6-4.

Federer sat out Roland Garros and the rest of the clay season in order to preserve himself for the grass and hard-court campaigns, but lost to 39-year-old Tommy Haas on his comeback in Stuttgart earlier this month.

Federer wrapped up the opening set after the first three games went against serve and there was a break apiece in the second before the legendary Swiss fended off a couple of set points to force a tie-break. Federer advanced when Khachanov lifted a backhand long on match point.

Federer will bid for his 92nd career title in what will be his 140th final against the fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev, who rallied to beat Richard Gasquet 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 for his seventh title-decider.

"I think what Nadal did at the French Open stands out".

Zverev, who had lost his first eight matches against top-10 players then beaten seven of the next 11 - including Federer in the semi-finals here past year - encountered the Swiss on one of his magical days.

"It was important to be aggressive off the baseline and make him feel my variation and the power I can bring to the court", Federer said afterward.

I don't know him that well yet so it's a match where I'll most likely focus on my own game. "I'm still just very happy how I was able to close it out in the tiebreaker".

Both players have been in exceptional form this year with Federer winning his 18Grand Slam while Zverev won his first Masters 1000 title at Rome.

Federer showing his class, did not waste much time in clinching the second set and easily cruised to the winning mark, thrashing Zverev 6-3 in the second set. He improved his all-time record at the tournament to 58-6 and is 23-2 on the season.
