Theresa May pledges 'humility and resolve' ahead of Queen's Speech programme

Prime Minister Theresa May will meet representatives from Northern Ireland's political parties at Downing Street

Campaigners, including parents, teachers, Tory backbenchers and chef Jamie Oliver, had been outraged by the cost-saving proposal, describing it as "robbing the most vulnerable". The usher carries, well, a black rod, which he bangs on the House of Commons door - only to have the door open and then slammed shut in his face.

Amid reports that opposition parties will try to bring down Mrs May with a series of targeted amendments to the Queen's Speech, the PM said she was still pushing for an alignment with the DUP.

She said: "Whilst our top priority right now is supporting the victims of the awful tragedy at Grenfell tower, we also need to look ahead by setting out a legislative programme that not only delivers a successful European Union exit but also a domestic agenda which aims to tackle the social injustices in our country. We are in complete unknown territory", he said on Wednesday.

The Prime Minister is expected to use the Queen's Speech to outline eight bills on the UK's exit from the European Union.

"The election result was not the one I hoped for, but this government will respond with humility and resolve to the message the electorate sent", May said in a statement.

This year's Queen's Speech will take place on Wednesday 21 June, two days later than originally planned as May seeks a deal with the DUP.

One former cabinet minister told the Daily Express: "The critical moment is June 28 and June 29 when there are votes on the Queen's Speech".

The promise follows a snap election in which May lost her majority. Pension reforms, capping energy bills, means testing winter fuel payments and the proposed expansion of the domestic shale gas industry are also potentially off the agenda.

May slimmed down her plans and omitted several policies touted in the Conservative election campaign, including plans to change funding for the care of older people, which opponents dubbed the "dementia tax". Her Government programme goes to a Commons vote next week.

In the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire and a string of terror attacks, the Prime Minister also announced plans for a civil disaster taskforce and a new commission for countering extremism, as well as a review of counter-terror strategy and the creation of an independent public advocate to act on behalf of bereaved families.

In addition, May is expected to stress the need for intelligence agencies to have more powers to investigate and stop militant plots - a pledge she made in the wake of recent deadly Islamist attacks in London and Manchester.
