Pennsylvania issues permits to 12 medical marijuana growers

The newly opened medical marijuana dispensary in Gainesville

The next phase, according to Schain, of Pennsylvania's Medical Marijuana Program regards "Clininical Registrants" in which grow/processor and dispensary licensure will be awarded to eight applicants, which, if able to satisfy requirements including demonstrating $15 million in capital, will be authorized to open up to six dispensary locations. The program splits the state into 6 regions, each with 2 growing facilities. He has said he will sue because lawmakers would not allow medical marijuana to be smoked.

The two other companies given permits Tuesday are Terrapin Investment Fund 1 LLC which plans a facility in Pine Creek Township, near Avis, in Clinton County and GTI Pennsylvania LLC which has plans for a facility in Danville, Montour County.

Two companies have received permits to grow and process marijuana in Southwest Pennsylvania, the state Department of Health announced Tuesday.

The state got 457 applications: 177 for the grower permits and another 280 for the dispensary permits.

A physician registry will go online in July with regulations for patients and caregivers published in September. They also said the product they anticipate growing would be for medical uses.

Leach began his fight for medical marijuana following years ago.

But it did have an extensive scoring process and, in the interests of transparency, the "scorecards" for each application are to be posted on the department web site shortly, Collins said.

Collins said permit awardees have six months to become operational. He said he could not estimate at this time how much will immediately be invested in New Castle by Holistic Farms. Applicants for dispensaries paid $5,000 to apply, and the winning applicants will pay a $30,000 permit fee.

Also, even the names on the applications were redacted, so they could be evaluated without consideration of any other factors or political connections. Daylin Leach, D-Montgomery County, one of the leading proponents of medical marijuana in the Legislature. Mike Folmer, R-48th Dist., confirmed that.

"It's nearly surreal. Sometimes I thought this day would never come", said Leach.

"This was a huge day for patients and for the people of Pennsylvania", Leach said. That will likely mean that more people in Pennsylvania will be eligible to use the drug, he said. That bill addressed major issues, such as how many companies will receive marijuana licenses and how many retail outlets they can run.
