McCain: Americans 'stupid' to travel to North Korea

Otto Warmbier died just days after his release from North Korea

"It's a brutal regime and we'll be able to handle it".

North Korea released Otto Warmbier, an American prisoner who spent more than a year in detention for an absurd crime, last week, but the regime sent the young man home in a coma.

It remains to be seen what actions, if any, the USA government will take in response to Warmbier's death.

Warmbier has passed away days after he was released by North Korea "on humanitarian grounds". "It's worth a forceful response".

Many politicians and public figures have responded to his parents' announcement, offering their sympathies and condemning the actions of North Korea.

Otto Warmbier died on Monday near his family home in OH after more than 15 months in North Korean captivity.

Warmbier's death has only heightened U.S. Upon his release, he told several news outlets he had been surprised by the comfortable conditions of his confinement. After a sham trial in 2016, he was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor.

Doctors from the Medical Center of the University of Cincinnati, where Warmbier died, said last week that the patient showed no signs of understanding language or awareness of his environment.

Doctors said he has suffered extensive loss of brain tissue and "profound weakness and contraction" of his muscles, arms and legs. North Korea has refrained from testing a nuclear device or an intercontinental ballistic missile that could deliver a warhead to North America.

The United States should ban tourist travel to North Korea, Royce said after Warmbier's parents announced their 22-year-old son's death on Monday. Poor hygienic conditions, diet or bad medical care may have been responsible for a coma that North Korean doctors couldn't handle. He was concerned about North Korea's food shortage and wanted to improve the country's agricultural economy, CNN reported. The U.S. has been pressing Pyongyang to halt its nuclear weapons development and urging China and other countries to starve the North of funding for the program.

The treatment that he received while under North Korean custody for a year-and-a-half was appalling and outrageous. "You've got to capitalize on this, and influence their internal debates to get them to recognize and acknowledge what happened".

So, what effect will the death of Otto Warmbier have on the wider, and seemingly intractable, question of how the United States should deal with North Korea?

Mostly, the administration has focused on pressuring China, which provides most of North Korea's food and fuel imports.

"He mentioned that it would be an honor to be able to meet Kim Jong-un", Moon told CBS.

"It has been 10 years since we were serious about North Korea sanctions and it is not too late to increase the pressure on Beijing and Pyongyang to protect the United States and its allies from the unsafe Kim regime", said Anthony Ruggiero, a sanctions specialist and senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

North Korea continues to test missiles at an unprecedented rate, while United States warships and aircraft have maintained a consistent presence in the region for months.

"It's painful that Mr. Warmbier was not among them, but our efforts on his behalf never ceased", he said.

Han Tae Song, North Korea's ambassador to the U.N.in Geneva, speaking in his first interview since taking up the post in February, declined to comment specifically about Warmbier's case or the fate of other American, South Korean and Canadian detainees still held by his country.

The government of China, North Korea's main ally, said Warmbier's death was a tragedy.Tensions between the United States and North Korea have been heightened by dozens of North Korean missile launches and two nuclear bomb tests since the beginning of past year in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions.
