Saudi Arabia Foils Terror Attack on Key Offshore Oilfield

Coast Guard of Saudi Arabia opened fire on Iranian vessels

"Accordingly and without establishing whether the Iranian boats had crossed Saudi borders, the coast guard of this country opened fire on the Iranian boats and an Iranian fisherman was killed after being shot in the waist".

"On Friday, 16th June, three small boats, bearing red and white flags, entered the Saudi territorial waters in the Arabian Gulf". The latest statement came more than 12 hours after Saudi Arabia said it had seized weapons from a boat captured in the Gulf's Marjan field at about 8:30 pm Friday.

An Iranian ministry of interior official said on Monday that Saudi Arabia's claim that it had detained three members of the Iranian military was not correct, according to a report by the Young Journalists Club news site. The other two boats escaped.

That statement made no mention of explosives and did not detail what type of weapons were found, though it said they were for "subversive purposes".

The statement, however, did not say who was behind the attack.

The assault was not only aimed at sending a message to IS, but also to the United States and Saudi Arabia.Tehran had repeatedly accused the Saudis and Washington of supporting terrorists and trying to destabilize Iran. It said the boat was allegedly one of two Iranian boats fishing in the Gulf that had been pushed off course by waves.

On Sunday, Iran has launched six ballistic missiles into Syria, targeting positions of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists in retaliation for the twin attacks in Tehran earlier this month.

Saudi Arabia has been trying to cement its ties throughout the Muslim world against the backdrop of higher tensions with its Iranian rival.
