Rory McIlroy destroys Australian golfer after US Open criticism

Rory Mc Ilroy torches snarky golfer with an epic Twitter response

Friday night, hours after McIlroy fired a second-round 71 that wasn't good enough to keep him playing through the weekend, Elkington took to Twitter to say McIlroy must be bored with golf because of the absence of Tiger Woods, even predicting the Northern Irishman has won his last major.

However, still hurting from his early exit, the criticism didn't sit well with McIlroy, who responded, saying: "More like 200mil... not bad for a "bored" 28 year old...plenty more where that came from", before listing his various achievements on the golf course.

But Elkington wasn't done, despite being shown the door by the No. 2 ranked golfer in the world.

McIlroy birdied four of his last six holes at Erin Hills to improve seven shots on his opening 78, but still missed the cut by four shots.

Elkington then attempted to dismiss McIlroy as a "money guy" (although we're sure he would have gladly accepted the winnings if his career had been more successful).

The spat continued with Elkington insisting he "new" McIlroy was interested only in money, unlike 18-time Major champion Jack Nicklaus.

McIlroy has revealed that he intends to play in next week's Travelers Championship and the Irish Open, Scottish Open and Open Championship in successive weeks in July. I know I'm doing the right thing. Dustin Johnson and Jason Day also missed the cut.

Elkington, who competes occasionally on the Champions Tour, won 10 PGA Tour tournaments, including the 1995 PGA Championship and two Players Championships.
