Conservatives lead, but Labour gains big in British election, exit polls show

May's UK election gamble backfires as Tories lose majority

On Thursday night, the Conservative Party lost their majority in a stunning upset that is being attributed to political activism spurred by the Brexit horror, and a voter turnout that increased by 5% since the previous election, according to the Independent.

The Queen would not expect to become involved in any negotiations, but the Palace would be kept informed via representatives of the political parties or the Cabinet Secretary.

All the while the country day by day gets a little more damaged by in-fighting and inaction - and guess where the blame will be placed, yes you've got it - Brexit! Further announcements were expected on Saturday.

"The government I lead will put fairness and opportunity at the heart of everything we do so that we will fulfill the promise of Brexit together", May said. However, the small regional party would not form part of a coalition government.

DUP leader Arlene Foster's initial comments were non-committal: "The prime minister has spoken with me this morning and we will enter discussions with the Conservatives to explore how it may be possible to bring stability to our nation at this time of great challenge".

"I think her position is, in the long term, untenable", Conservative lawmaker Anna Soubry told Sky News.

With 650 MPs in Parliament, 326 seats are needed for an absolute majority in the House of Commons.

Ms. May said the government would guide the country through critical Brexit talks, due to take place later this month, suggesting there would be no change to the timeline.

Mrs. May wants to remain in office for the next five years, but most analysts agree that the Conservative establishment will terminate her premiership when the time is right and they will select another candidate to lead them into the next general election - Judy. Our negotiations with the European Union will be stifled by parliamentary and legal challenges every single inch of the way, wasting untold time and money.

Despite the Tory leader's confidence she can provide "certainty", the result does cast an element of doubt on the Brexit process.

Voters failed to give a ringing endorsement to May's plan for Brexit, which involves leaving the EU's single market and imposing restrictions on immigration while trying to negotiate free trade deal with the bloc.

A major campaign issue centered on Britain's plan to leave the European Union, also called Brexit. There were also shock results in Scotland.

Davidson, one of the few Conservatives to emerge as a victor from the election after she increased the party's presence in Scotland, said she had demanded, and received, "categoric assurance" from May that the policy would not change.

"May won't be able to make any compromises because she lacks a broad parliamentary majority", he said.

Agreeing a position with the DUP is going to be "very hard for May", argues Bronwen Maddox, the director of the Institute for Government, a think tank.

Confident of securing a sweeping victory, May had called the snap election to strengthen her hand in the European Union divorce talks.

"We are ready. We have completed the guidelines, the framework", Merkel said Friday in Mexico City.

Late in the campaign, Britain was hit by two Islamist militant attacks that killed 30 people in Manchester and London, temporarily shifting the focus onto security issues.
