Cosby accuser thanks prosecutors after mistrial

Bill Cosby walks from the Montgomery County Courthouse during his sexual assault trial in Norristown Pa. Friday

Bill Cosby gestures as he leaves the Montgomery County Courthouse during his sexual assault trial, Friday, June 16, 2017, in Norristown, Pa.

Though even if that is technically true, seemingly no academics or celebrities who've talked about the case have ventured to suggest that the two won't be forever linked, or that it won't be up to future generations to process Cosby's impact on the culture for themselves, with all the information that comes with it.

Constand's attorneys released a statement following the mistrial, thanking both the jury and the prosecutors in the case.

Cosby allegedly drugged and molested Constand in 2004. He remains free on bail until the next trial is scheduled.

Attorney Gloria Allred, who represents many of Cosby's accusers, said she hopes the court will allow other "prior bad act witnesses" to testify at the next trial.

Constand was composed on the stand under a fierce barrage of cross-examination from the defense, which sought to portray their relationship as consensual, and Cosby's accuser as a liar.

In a press conference afterward, prosecutor Kevin Steele declined to comment on the statement. Those women, and in fact all other sexual assault victims and their supporters, were put on trial by the defense, too.

I also looked at Cosby and saw a man who in some ways is still one lucky guy - still supported by his wife of 54 years, Camille, and to a remarkable extent, spared the national avalanche of attention that his trial would normally have attracted by all the high drama surrounding the self-proclaimed p_-grabber in the White House. "Overtly arrogant, collaborating with the district attorney", said her statement, which was read by Wyatt and tweeted by her husband.

Prosecutors announced immediately that they would retry the case, leading to the prospect of the now frail and disgraced comedian, once adored by millions as "America's Dad", could yet return to court.

By Thursday morning, after almost 30 hours of discussions spanning three days, the jurors told O'Neill they were at a stalemate.

Cosby remained stoic, while Constand embraced the person next to her. Jurors were unable to render a unanimous verdict on the three counts of felony aggravated indecent assault Cosby had been charged with.

But it was Cosby's reputation as a public moralist who urged young people to pull up their saggy trousers and start acting responsibly that prompted a federal judge to unseal portions of an explosive deposition he gave more than a decade ago as part of Constand's civil lawsuit against him.

Jury questions posed during Bill Cosby's sex assault trial.

Constand, then 31, met the married Cosby 15 years ago through her job as an administrator with the women's basketball team at Temple University in Philadelphia, where Cosby was a trustee and the school's most renowned alumnus.

The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they grant permission, which Constand has done.

In a February 17, 2005, news release, former District Attorney Bruce Castor Jr. said no criminal charges were forthcoming but he would "reconsider" the decision "should the need arise", according to the affidavit.

There seems little doubt all this will be rehashed with prosecutors vowing to retry Cosby.

The Pennsylvania jury that deadlocked on the fate of Bill Cosby mirrored the split in the court of public opinion.

"Bill Cosby has already been exposed as a predator who hid behind his jovial mask for more than 50 years and no jury verdict will ever change that", she posted on Facebook. The judge has refused, saying jurors are permitted under the law to deliberate as long as they want. The jurors have been trying to break a deadlock.
