Kamala Harris has the mic now, so everybody needs to sit down

Kamala Harris makes Jeff Sessions nervous

Kamala Harris (D-Calif.).

In another moment from Attorney General Jeff Sessions' testimony before the Senate Intel Committee today, Senator Kamala Harris was shut down while trying to get an answer out of Sessions on refusing to answer questions without invoking executive privilege.

"It's easy to make jokes about mansplaining or microaggressions, or subtle sexism - to trivialize the harms that occur when people are treated disrespectfully", Williams says.

In the video, Harris can be seen telling Sessions, "Sir, sir, I have just a few minutes".

"Calling someone hysterical is sexist", Hostin responded.

Harris: that you would be asked these ... Had it been a court of law, the judge may well have cited Harris for contempt with her abrupt and uncalled-for lack of professionalism. "She was purely out there to shout down".

By the time the dust settled, Sessions had told Harris that her style of questioning made him "nervous".

And that's basically as far as she got.

Sessions insisted that he didn't want to be rushed during his questioning, because he didn't want to be later accused of lying should he not properly qualify his answers.

Sessions' answer was the same one that he repeated throughout the hearing: "I don't recall".

Harris spoke about the everyday Americans who would be helped by policies promoting economic justice, such as a $15 minimum wage and debt-free college education, particularly women who have been left behind in the past. She pressed Sessions on his basis for declining to answer questions about his conversations with Trump. "Mr. Chairman, the witness should be allowed to answer the question", McCain said.

But Harris wouldn't allow him to fully answer and cut him off with another question.

Sessions seemed to be able to answer that, with some qualification, mostly that he didn't believe he did.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Richard Burr (R-NC) cut off Sen. In September 2012, she took the stage at the Democratic National Convention, where she slammed President Barack Obama's political opponents. Her name has come up as a 2020 presidential candidate, but Harris, 52, dismisses talk about a future run. She was also interrupted by Burr and McCain while questioning Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein the previous week.

"Can you give me a yes or no answer?" she asked.

Harris is the only black woman on the committee, or in the Senate for that matter.

The pattern of men interrupting women is both well-trodden territory in America's workforce and well-documented in academic circles. We all get interrupted at this table all the time. So who was interrupted the most during the #JeffSessions hearing?

That's not just a stat for bros in board rooms. "If she protested more often, there were problems". Its symptoms were so wide-ranging as to render the term nearly totally meaningless except as a way to pathologize women's behavior, but they often included nervousness, irritability, so-called "modification of character" and even seizures.
