Pakistani PM hopes for swift solution to crisis over Qatar

In Washington, US President Donald Trump, who has strongly backed the countries imposing sanctions on Qatar despite a more neutral stance taken by the State Department and Pentagon, said the measures were helping to stop terrorism funding.

Pakistani TV showed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa arriving in Riyadh on Monday.

"Whatever relates to our foreign affairs.no one has the right to discuss", Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani told reporters during a visit to Paris.

He said Qatar desires to resolve the issue through negotiations.

Qatar, for its part, has denied the accusations, calling the moves to diplomatically isolate it as "unjustified".

The Eritrean Information Ministry's statement of support on Monday came despite its previously close ties with energy-rich Qatar.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today slammed the economic and political isolation of Qatar as inhumane and contrary to Islamic values after key Gulf states broke off ties with Ankara's ally.

Qatar has also appealed to global aviation authorities to rule as illegal the overflight ban imposed on Qatar Airways by its neighbours, and has briefed lawyers to challenge the flight and other restrictions in the courts. Some of Qatar's policies, such as its support for the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas, clash with USA priorities; yet it also hosts a U.S. military base that is crucial to the fight against Islamic State. Qatar has also accused Saudi Arabia of backing the militant group.

Qatar, which imported 80 per cent of its food from bigger Gulf Arab neighbours before the diplomatic shutdown, has also been talking to Iran and Turkey to secure food and water.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson is meeting officials from several Gulf countries this week, and is urging his counterparts to take immediate steps to de-escalate the current tensions and find a rapid resolution through mediation. Qatar has called those charges baseless. Shipments of containers through the UAE port of Jebel Ali were frozen last week.

With Saudi shutting the land border, families living in either sides will be having tough time to cross the border to meet each other.

The new flights have increased Iranian air traffic by 17 per cent, the official state news agency has reported. That helped spark the crisis, which began June 5 when Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt cut diplomatic ties and started trying to isolate Qatar from the rest of the world.
